Adaptation of NAC Line 2 for Ammonium Nitrosulfate Production at the SEFANITRO Plant

Project Profile

Sector

Chemistry

Country

Spain

Scope

Construction Supervision, Detail Engineering, Construction Management

Year

2006-2008

Customer

FERTIBERIA S.A.

Engineering development, construction supervision, and owner’s engineering services for the adaptation of NAC Line 2 for Ammonium Nitrosulfate (NSA) production at the SEFANITRO plant. The project also included complementary works related to the modification of industrial facilities, utility systems, and infrastructure associated with the relocation and reorganization of production activities.

Adaptation of NAC Line 2 for Ammonium Nitrosulfate Production at the SEFANITRO Plant

The Challenge

As part of its industrial optimization strategy, FERTIBERIA decided to relocate part of its production activities from its Lutxana-Barakaldo facilities (Bizkaia) to its Avilés plant, requiring the adaptation of NAC Line 2 for the production of Ammonium Nitrosulfate.

This transition involved significant technical and management challenges, including modifications to existing facilities while maintaining operational reliability and meeting strict safety and environmental standards.

Key project challenges included:

  • Adapting existing industrial facilities to new production requirements.
  • Coordinating multiple engineering and construction activities within an operating industrial environment.
  • Managing projects related to the reorganization of services, infrastructure, and production assets.
  • Supporting activities associated with the progressive decommissioning of industrial facilities.
  • Ensuring operational continuity while complying with safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
  • Preparing industrial areas for future redevelopment and urban regeneration projects.

The Solution

EIA21 participated in all key stages of the project, providing integrated engineering and construction management services to ensure successful execution.

The main activities included:

  • Detailed engineering for the adaptation of NAC Line 2.
  • Development of complementary projects involving utilities and industrial facilities upgrades.
  • 3D design coordination and engineering modeling.
  • Technical supervision of construction and installation activities.
  • Owner’s engineering and site management services.
  • Coordination between engineering, construction, and plant operations teams to optimize project execution.

Results

  • Successful adaptation of NAC Line 2 for Ammonium Nitrosulfate production.
  • Effective execution of industrial facility modification and upgrade projects.
  • Comprehensive supervision and control of construction and installation activities.
  • Delivery of engineering solutions supporting FERTIBERIA’s industrial reorganization strategy.
  • Participation in industrial decommissioning activities and site preparation for future redevelopment.
  • Achievement of the technical, operational, construction, and safety objectives established by the client.
