Compressor Electrification Through Steam Turbine Replacement with Motor-Drive System P69 (P69)

The Challenge

The project involved replacing an existing steam turbine with an electric motor-drive system in a critical plant compressor, ensuring compatibility with operating conditions, integration with existing systems, and continuity of the industrial process.

The main challenge was adapting a facility originally designed for steam turbine drive to an electrified solution, considering process, mechanical, electrical, and control aspects, while minimizing risks during implementation in an operating industrial environment.

The Solution

EIA21 provided an integrated service ranging from techno-economic feasibility studies to detailed engineering and procurement management.

The scope included:

  • Investment study and feasibility assessment of the technological upgrade.
  • Multidisciplinary detailed engineering (process, equipment, piping, structures, electrical and instrumentation).
  • Adaptation of the existing installation to the new motor-drive system.
  • Procurement management and technical bid evaluation.
  • Expediting and inspection of equipment during the manufacturing phase.

This approach ensured the technical integration of the new system while guaranteeing operational reliability and compliance with client requirements.

Results

The project enabled the electrification of the compression system through the replacement of the steam turbine with a high-efficiency motor-drive system.

Key results included:

  • Improved energy efficiency of the compression system.
  • Reduced operating costs and lower dependence on fuel consumption.
  • Increased system reliability and controllability.
  • Safe integration within the existing infrastructure.
  • Risk reduction during project execution through technical control and supervision.

This project contributes to the transition toward more efficient and sustainable energy solutions within the Oil & Gas industry.
