Development of the detailed engineering package for the RESLAG Pilot Plant, located in Sestao (Bizkaia), aimed at recovering and utilizing residual heat generated in steelmaking processes. The project was part of a research and innovation initiative focused on improving energy efficiency and sustainability in the steel industry.

RESLAG Pilot Plant for Steel Mill Waste Heat Recovery

The Challenge

The RESLAG Pilot Plant was conceived to validate innovative technologies for recovering thermal energy from steelmaking off-gases and slag, transforming waste heat into a valuable energy resource capable of improving industrial process efficiency.

This demonstration-scale facility was designed to support the development of new solutions for energy recovery in one of the most energy-intensive industrial sectors.

The main project challenges included:

  • Adapting an experimental facility to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Integrating multiple engineering disciplines within a research and development environment.
  • Validating the technical feasibility of innovative waste heat recovery systems.
  • Coordinating the activities required for the start-up of a pioneering pilot plant.
  • Meeting the technical, operational, and safety requirements of a demonstration-scale industrial installation.

The Solution

EIA21 developed a multidisciplinary engineering solution focused on the comprehensive adaptation of the pilot plant, implementing the modifications required to optimize operability and facilitate commissioning.

The scope of work included:

  • Review and update of the existing engineering documentation.
  • Development of detailed engineering for plant modifications and upgrades.
  • Coordination of all engineering disciplines involved in the project.
  • Technical support during implementation and installation activities.
  • Supervision of pre-commissioning works.
  • Assistance during testing, commissioning, and start-up activities.

Results

  • Validation and completion of the engineering required for plant commissioning.
  • Successful execution of the pilot plant adaptation project.
  • Start-up and operation of the facility according to project objectives.
  • Contribution to the development of innovative energy recovery solutions for the steel industry.
  • Support for research initiatives focused on industrial energy efficiency and decarbonization.
