Project Profile

Sector

Water Treatment

Country

Qatar

Scope

3D, BIM, Detail Engineering

Year

2019-2024

Customer

ACCIONA AGUA, S.A.U.

Development of detailed engineering, 3D modeling, and BIM coordination for the desalination plant serving the North Field East (NFE) project in Qatar. The facility is designed to supply process water and utility services for one of the world’s largest natural gas liquefaction complexes.

North Field East (NFE) Desalination Plant for the Gas Liquefaction Complex

The Challenge

The NFE Desalination Plant represented one of the most significant water treatment projects undertaken by EIA21, both in terms of production capacity and the complexity of its technical and documentation requirements.

The project required the coordinated involvement of multiple engineering disciplines working under the standards, procedures, and quality requirements established by Technip Energies, within a highly demanding environment characterized by strict document control and change management processes.

Key project challenges included:

  • Participating in the first desalination plant of this scale developed by EIA21.
  • Rapidly acquiring expertise in desalination-specific technologies, equipment, and systems.
  • Adapting a previous reference design to new technical and operational requirements defined by Technip Energies.
  • Meeting highly demanding project delivery schedules.
  • Maintaining continuous multidisciplinary coordination across all engineering disciplines.
  • Participating in regular project reviews and 3D model workshops with the end client.
  • Managing a large volume of technical documentation under rigorous approval and traceability procedures.

The Solution

To ensure efficient project execution and minimize risks during design and construction phases, EIA21 implemented a strategy based on digital engineering, BIM collaboration, and continuous multidisciplinary coordination.

The main activities included:

  • Full development of the 3D model and BIM coordination across all engineering disciplines.
  • Daily clash detection processes to optimize the integration of systems, equipment, and structures.
  • Preparation, together with ACCIONA Agua, of process engineering documentation, including calculations, P&ID reviews, and process descriptions.
  • Mechanical equipment specification, bid evaluation, and procurement support.
  • Development of internal electrical engineering tools to streamline cable sizing calculations and cable tray filling analysis.
  • Instrumentation and control system design.
  • Continuous coordination with ACCIONA Agua, Technip Energies, and all project stakeholders.
  • Agile adaptation to scope changes and evolving project requirements.
  • Implementation of Technip Energies’ engineering procedures and methodologies.
  • Ongoing monitoring of technical documentation to ensure traceability and compliance with project standards.

Results

  • Successful completion of the Detailed Outfitting Engineering for the Blue Eagle FPSO.
  • Efficient coordination of piping, ventilation, and cable routing systems through a fully integrated 3D design environment.
  • Optimization of vessel constructability and installation processes during shipyard fabrication and assembly.
  • Compliance with all technical and regulatory requirements established by the shipyard and vessel owner.
  • Successful integration of process, utility, safety, and auxiliary systems within a complex offshore production unit.
  • Strengthening of EIA21’s expertise in FPSO, offshore, and marine engineering projects.
