Engineering services for the Alkimos SWRO (Seawater Reverse Osmosis) Desalination Plant in Australia, including mechanical equipment engineering, BIM coordination, and piping flexibility and stress analysis for one of the country’s most significant water infrastructure projects.

Alkimos SWRO Desalination Plant

The Challenge

EIA21 is involved in the detailed engineering development of the Alkimos Desalination Plant, a strategic infrastructure project designed to strengthen potable water supply in Western Australia through advanced seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology.

The project scope includes mechanical equipment engineering and piping stress and flexibility analysis to ensure the mechanical integrity, reliability, and long-term performance of critical process systems under all operating conditions.

Large-scale desalination plants operate under demanding conditions, including high pressures, significant flow rates, and stringent performance requirements. These conditions require comprehensive engineering analysis to guarantee safe and efficient operation.

The main project challenges included:

  • Developing engineering solutions for a high-capacity desalination facility.
  • Verifying the mechanical integrity of systems operating under high pressure.
  • Performing flexibility and stress analyses on critical process piping systems.
  • Coordinating engineering activities with international multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ensuring compliance with client specifications and project standards.
  • Supporting long-term operational reliability and plant availability.

The Solution

EIA21 provided a specialized mechanical and piping engineering team to support the detailed engineering development of the project.

The scope of work included:

  • Detailed engineering of mechanical equipment.
  • Piping stress and flexibility analysis.
  • Evaluation of loads, displacements, and mechanical stresses on process systems.
  • Verification of operating, start-up, and shutdown conditions.
  • Technical coordination with all engineering disciplines.
  • Review and validation of engineering solutions to ensure safety, reliability, and constructability.

Results

  • Successful completion of mechanical and piping engineering activities.
  • Verification of the mechanical integrity of critical piping systems.
  • Design optimization through advanced stress and flexibility analysis.
  • Compliance with the quality and technical standards established by ACCIONA Agua.
  • Participation in one of Australia’s most important water infrastructure developments.
